Term: Coverage With an End Date

Term life runs 10, 20, or 30 years, then stops. It is cheap when you are young. But most people outlive it — and then the money is gone with nothing to show. Buying new term at 70 or 75 is dear, if anyone will sell it to you at all.

Whole Life: Coverage Without an End Date

Whole life has no end date. The premium is fixed on day one. It builds cash value — a small savings amount inside the plan. Per $1,000 of coverage it costs more than term. But final expense plans are small ($5,000 to $35,000), so the monthly bill stays modest.

The rule of thumb: guarding paycheck years? Term fits. Making sure the funeral is paid whenever you go? That is whole life's job. Final expense plans are whole life for this reason.

Can They Work Together?

Yes. Many people hold term for income years and add a small whole-life plan for final costs. Keep the term until the new plan is approved and in force — never drop coverage first.

Frequently Asked Questions

My term plan ends at 70. What then?

That is exactly the gap final expense fills. A small whole-life plan has no end date, so there is no cliff at 70, 80, or 100.

Is whole life a good investment?

Do not buy it as an investment. Buy it as protection. The cash value grows slowly — a side perk, not the point.

What does "cash value" mean in plain words?

A small savings amount inside the plan that grows over the years. You can borrow from it. Unpaid loans shrink the payout.
