Guaranteed Issue vs. Simplified: Which Do You Actually Need?

Many people overpay for guaranteed issue when they would qualify for simplified. Here is the plain-English difference.

What "Simplified Issue" Means

Simplified issue means the application is simple. You answer a short list of yes-or-no health questions. There is no medical exam. No blood draw. No nurse visit.

The questions are simple. Have you had a heart attack in the last few years? Are you in a hospital right now? Most fairly healthy seniors answer no to all of them. Then they get approved.

The company learns a bit about your health. So these plans tend to give you more for your money. Full coverage often starts on day one. No waiting period.

What "Guaranteed Issue" Means

Guaranteed issue means what it says: no health questions at all. If you are in the right age range, you are approved.

This is the safety net for people with serious health issues. It is for folks who would be turned down anywhere else. There is no exam. There are no questions. The company does not check.

The trade-off is real. Guaranteed issue plans usually cost more for less coverage. And most of them come with a waiting period — often two years — before the full benefit is paid for a natural death.

The Mistake Many People Make

Here is a common mistake. A healthy 70-year-old sees a TV ad. They think "guaranteed issue" means "top choice." They sign up. They pay more each month for less coverage. And they get a two-year wait they never needed.

If you can answer the short health questions, simplified plans tend to be the better deal. Lower cost. More coverage. No waiting period. Guaranteed-issue plans are for people who cannot qualify for anything else. They are the backup plan, not the first pick.

Which One Fits You?

Ask yourself one honest question: could I answer "no" to a short list of health questions? If yes, start with simplified issue. An agent can walk you through the questions in about ten minutes.

Consider guaranteed issue only if health problems would knock you out of simplified issue — or if you have already been turned down. There is no shame in that. That is exactly what guaranteed issue was built for.

One more thing. Neither type needs a medical exam. If someone says you must take an exam for final expense coverage, that is not true.

Not Sure Which One You Qualify For?

Do not guess — and do not overpay for the wrong one. Call (407) 434-9297 for a free, no-pressure chat. I will walk you through the health questions, tell you honestly which type fits, and show you real quotes for both. Ten minutes could save you hundreds a year.
