What "Level Premium" Means
Level means flat. Same payment every month. It does not rise as you get older. It does not rise because the company had a bad year. You pay the same amount at age 90 that you paid at age 65.
Most final expense plans sold to Florida seniors are level-premium whole life. That means the price you agree to on day one is the price for life. As long as you keep paying, your coverage stays in place.
Which Plans Keep Your Price the Same
Whole life plans made for final expenses keep the price flat. The company sets the price for your whole life up front. That is why the first payment can feel a bit higher than some other plans. The cost is spread out evenly instead of rising later.
Term life is different. Term plans often hold the price steady for a set number of years — 10, 15, or 20. After that, the price can jump a lot at renewal. If someone sells you term insurance for final expenses, ask what happens when the term ends. A big jump at age 85 is exactly what you do not want.
What Can Change Your Payment
With a true level-premium plan, the company cannot raise your rate. But a few things on your side can change what you pay:
- Missed payments. If a policy lapses and you restart it later, the new price may be higher because you are older.
- Adding coverage. If you raise your benefit amount, your payment goes up to match.
- Policy loans. Borrowing from your policy does not raise the premium, but unpaid loan interest can eat into the cash value over time.
None of these are the company raising your price. They are choices or events that change the deal.
How to Check Before You Buy
Ask the agent three questions and get the answers in writing:
- Is this premium locked in to stay level for life?
- Is this whole life, or term that renews at a higher price?
- What, if anything, could change my payment?
If the answers are "yes, whole life, and nothing," you have the kind of plan most seniors want. If the agent dodges the question, that tells you plenty too.
Your Price Should Never Be a Surprise
On a fixed income, every dollar is spoken for. A level premium lets you plan with peace of mind — the same bill, month after month, year after year.
